In Design for Death, Barbara Jones shows the reader some of the beautiful, vulgar, and frightening things which the human race chooses, or has chosen, to make for and of its dead. Jones is chiefly concerned with American and British objects, but she also delves into the customs of different times and regions, including Egypt, Mexico, Portugal, Peru, and Indonesia.

The chapters follow the corpse from death onwards: detailing what is made of the body itself; how it is ornamented, dressed, and boxed; the ceremonial trappings of the funeral procession; how the grave is marked and adorned; how the survivors adorn themselves, create mementoes, and preserve relics. All are described by Jones in ironically witty text accompanied by over two hundred drawings and twenty-four pages of photographs.
