Written in 1971 and read here by Derek Jarman himself, Through the Billboard Promised Land Without Ever Stopping is the filmmaker’s only known work of narrative fiction. A hallucinatory, myth-soaked fairytale, it follows the young blind King Amethyst and his valet John on a purposeless journey across a dreamlike America.

The story anticipates imagery that would later surface in Jarman’s films, including the alchemical and chromatic visions associated with Blue. Blending archetype, autobiography and psychosexual symbolism, it unfolds in richly poetic language, suspended between fable and modernity.
