The short-lived magazine Provoke is recognized as a major achievement in Japanese postwar photography; uniting, in its three issues, the country’s most contentious examples of vanguard fine art, protest photography, and critical theory of the late 1960s and early 70s. The writing and images produced by Provoke’s members – critic Koji Taki, poet Takahiko Okada, and photographers Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, and Daido Moriyama – were suffused with the aesthetic common to Japanese protest books, which made use of innovative graphic design and inexpensive materials.
Published to accompany the first exhibition ever to be held about the magazine and its creators, this book focuses on the historical context surrounding Provoke, and covers the period leading up to its first issue and the aftermath following its final issue. This volume provides a rich interpretation of the currents in Japanese art and society at a moment of national collapse and renewal.
