The publication of this book coincided with a touring exhibition (originally held at the Städtische Galerie in Lenbachhaus, Munich, from 2 August – 22 October 1989), which displayed 200 previously unexhibited photographs, sketches and newspaper clippings which Richter had compiled for his Atlas project in the years previous.
