This publication presents a unique survey of the Japanese textile tradition of Boro. Literally translated to ‘rags’, and originating in the cold climate of Northern Japan, the practice involves the process of collecting discarded pieces of cloth and stitching them together to create clothing and household furnishings. Long overlooked in Japan on account of the associations between boros and poverty, there has been a new found (particularly Western) interest in boros – both for their artistry, as well as the socio-historical insight they provide.
Text in Japanese and English.
