Citizens of the Twentieth Century brings together a collection of images from August Sander's extensive archive, he admirably captures a cross section of German society during the Weimar Republic. The book is organised how the photographer had originally planned, the photos are divided into seven sections: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, The Artist, Woman, The City, Classes and Professions, and finally The Last People. These categories reveal that despite taking portraits of individuals it was the hierarchy of occupations that interested Sander and how to group the individuals into them.
