This oversized, hardcover book features over 400 of his photographs, sourced from an archive of mostly unpublished images taken at the height of Keita’s productivity in downtown Bamako. Distinct periods in his career are marked by the distinctive patterned backdrops and props that he used and the artist often styled his subjects himself. The pictures capture a diverse range of the people that lived in and passed through Bamako: migratory youth, government officials, shop owners and Bamako’s cultural elite are all present. Whilst Keita’s photographs served as both family record and cultural status symbol for the clients who commissioned them, these images have since become a lasting visual record of Mali at that time.
