Rasen Kaigan is Lieko Shiga's third monograph, following on from 'Lilly' and 'Canary' both published in 2007. Since 2006 Shiga has been based on a residency program in Kitakama, in the Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. This area was the worst hit by the 2011 tsunami and in the wake of those events Shiga lost all her work. Since the devastation Shiga has continued to foster a relationship with this region, 'Rasen Kaigan' displays her work produced to date. Her photographs are characterised by the use of light, colour and merging the dream world with reality. Her fantastical images explore the nature of the medium, taken at either night or dusk with double exposures and inventive cross processing.
