Butoh emerged after the second world war, the term covers a diverse range of activities but primarily it is a form of contemporary dance. Butoh revolutionised the view of what dance could be, drawing on traditional Japanese movements, such as the mincing steps that one must take when wearing a kimono, and allowing the body to speak for itself through unconscious and improvised movement. The photographs taken by Mitsutoshi Hanaga beautifully capture these radical movements and Butoh's powerful imagery.
