Lyle Bongé began photographing the Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans in 1955 and has returned every year since. He and James Leo Herlihy (author of Midnight Cowboy) first met at Black Mountain College; Herlihy accompanied Bongé in 1973 to view Mardi Gras for the first time and see his old friend at work.
