For the twentieth edition of Visionaire, Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons were invited to guest-edit the publication and given the creative freedom to redefine its format. The issue was conceived as a visual interview and Rei Kawakubo opened up her archives to select her favourite pieces, to be shot by photographers Mario Sorrenti, Phillip-Lorca diCorcia and Nick Knight. Phillip-Lorca diCorcia took Comme des Garçons to the streets of Hong Kong, while at Rei Kawakubo's request Nick Knight mixed Comme des Garçons with Alexander McQueen and produced one of the most identifiable fashion photographs of the era. The edition features a sealed muslin dress pattern, included to mark the launch of Comme des Garçons 'bump' collection. Visionaire is produced three times a year, this 1997 collaboration became one of their fastest ever selling issues.
